Conservation and Environmental Authorities

Overview

Conservation Authority in Ontario is made up of a co-operative network of 36, community-based watershed management teams. These agencies are dedicated to conserving, restoring and managing Ontario’s natural resources.

Strategies

Some of their conservation strategies are listed below:

  • Ensure that Ontario’s rivers, lakes and streams are properly safeguarded, managed and restored;
  • Protect, manage and restore Ontario’s woodlands, wetlands and natural habitat;
  • Develop and maintain programs that will protect life and property from natural hazards such as flooding and erosion;
  • Provide opportunities for the public to enjoy/ learn from and respect Ontario’s natural environment.

Conservation Authorities are nonprofit organizations, each include their own Board of Directors whose members have been appointed by local municipalities.  There are over 90% of Ontario’s municipalities that are currently managed by a conservation authority.

The purpose behind conservation authorities are be the shift of a new, more entrepreneurial way of conducting environmental business.  This focuses on managing and providing excellent watershed and ecosystem based resources.
